Angola lies on Southern Africa’s Atlantic coast, and Portuguese is its official language. Natural resources are an important part of its economy, alongside the practical work of building and operating businesses.

Living and working alongside our team gives you time to get to know Angola through daily life. Follow a project beyond a single meeting and learn from the people who keep operations moving.

What you will learn

Learning with our Angola team

Natural resources and operations

Learn about our work in natural resources and industrial development through supervised exposure to daily operations. Follow the planning behind a project and see how teams handle the practical demands of operating on site.

Negotiations and communication

Join approved meetings and negotiations in a supervised learning capacity. Practise preparing briefings, explaining your analysis and speaking to an audience. Your role in each activity will be agreed with your supervisor.

Staff-approved weekend city visits may offer another view of Angola when the location, schedule and security conditions allow. Much of the programme will be spent in remote locations, where leisure options are limited. Staying for several months gives you time to follow work as it develops.

Programme support

Support during your placement

Accommodation, programme flights, arranged transport and meals are included. Private medical insurance is also included, as part of the support arranged for your placement.

Placements of three months or longer are compensated. A written offer will set out your compensation and working arrangements before you accept.

Preparation and safety

Safety is a priority in programme planning. We plan to use professional security support and maintain appropriate consular contact with relevant embassies.

Preparation starts before departure. Participants will receive a placement briefing covering security procedures and emergency assistance, including medical and evacuation arrangements.

Who should apply

  • Students aged 18 or over, enrolled in an associate, bachelor’s or master’s programme at a two- or four-year institution. An admission offer may support an application; enrolment must be confirmed before the placement begins.
  • Applicants able to commit for three months to one year. Six months is recommended; a three-month summer programme is also available.
  • Clear English communication for work, learning and safety briefings. Portuguese is useful, and any placement-specific language requirement will be confirmed during selection.
  • An interest in natural resources, business operations or international experience, supported by a thoughtful application. No particular field of study is required at the initial application stage.
  • Readiness to follow site procedures, respect local colleagues and culture, protect confidential information and work within assigned responsibilities.
  • Ability to meet the immigration and work-authorisation requirements applicable to the placement. Any academic credit must be agreed with your institution.

Understand the commitment

Movement and supervision

Participants are required to stay within the designated worksite or residential area unless staff approve an outing. Independent wandering and unapproved travel are not permitted under the programme’s safety rules. Approved outings use the arrangements specified by staff.

These rules do not prevent seeking emergency assistance, contacting a consulate or leaving the programme. Participants retain control of their passports and personal documents. Withdrawal and return-travel arrangements must be agreed before departure.

Remote living and meals

Expect substantial time in remote locations and limited leisure activities. Resource constraints mean that some dietary needs cannot be accommodated. Discuss essential requirements privately with the programme team before accepting a placement; the team must confirm what can be provided.

Selection and participation

Submit the required application materials. The team will review your background, motivation and availability and may invite you to an interview. Selected applicants receive a written offer and prepare for departure with the programme team. Required authorisations and placement arrangements must be confirmed before travel.

Stay connected after graduation

We want to stay in touch with participants as their careers develop. After graduation, you can be considered for opportunities with our New York or Angola teams. We give strong priority to people whose work we already know; the programme gives you a chance to show how you work over several months.
