Summary
New Zealand’s Electricity Authority has amended the format used for retail product information and confirmed a later start for electronic information requests [6, 7]. Its updated resilience roadmap separately addresses coordination across electricity networks [8].
Key developments
- Retailers must use the EIEP14A format for responses to consumer or authorised-agent requests for product information from 30 October 2026 (Electricity Authority, released 30 October 2026, [6]). The amendment permits additional characters in some fields after participants identified a need to convey product details more efficiently [6]. This is a practical change to the information passed between parties. It supplies no evidence that bills have fallen or that consumers have switched plans. A more usable response format could support those decisions, but the announcement reports the format change itself.
- Electronic requests under the updated consumption-data format and the new product-data format have a later implementation date [7]. Access through the Registry transfer hub is part of the announced arrangement, with retailers responding in the appropriate regulated format [7]. Requesting information and providing the response are separate steps. Keeping their dates distinct matters for assessing readiness: the current response-format obligation should not be read as immediate implementation of every new request channel. The decision also records concerns raised during consultation about cost and possible duplication with Open Electricity [7]. It does not quantify a net benefit.
- The updated Future Security and Resilience roadmap adjusts work priorities and timeframes and includes Future System Operation work [8]. The Authority links that work to distributed energy resources and greater coordination across transmission and distribution [8]. The roadmap is a view of upcoming policy and operational work. It does not report a completed network upgrade or measured improvement in reliability. Its relevance is to the sequence of decisions that could affect how increasingly distributed resources are coordinated. Implementation evidence will need to come from the individual workstreams.
Prices and data
| Measure | Value and unit | Observation period | Source and release date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Retail product responses | 30 Oct 2026 | EIEP14A required from this date | Electricity Authority; 30 Oct 2026 [6] |
| Electronic request formats | 1 Apr 2027 | Announced start date | Electricity Authority; 27 Oct 2026 [7] |
| Roadmap feedback deadline | 8 Dec 2026 | Current invitation for feedback | Electricity Authority; 27 Oct 2026 [8] |
This edition records implementation dates rather than spot prices. Each date refers to a different obligation or process; none measures generation, installed capacity or a consumer saving.
What to watch next week
- We are monitoring implementation information on product responses following the effective date above [6]. Practical guidance could clarify how retailers handle requests that need the expanded fields.
- We are monitoring preparation for electronic requests and feedback on the resilience roadmap [7, 8]. Further material could clarify interfaces between the workstreams; the reviewed announcements do not establish a new decision during the coming week.
