South African manganese sales lag as Angola output recovers

Summary

South32’s latest report shows higher South African manganese production alongside lower sales, while Angola’s September figures record a recovery in oil and gas output. Freight decisions and differences in product measurement limit what these production gains say about sales.

Key developments

South32 reported on 19 October that its share of South Africa Manganese production reached 588,000 wet metric tonnes in the July–September 2026 quarter, up 11% from the preceding quarter. Sales fell 22% to 460,000 wet metric tonnes. The company attributed the output improvement to underground productivity at Wessels; reduced trucking and a shipment deferred into the December quarter weighed on sales. Trucking economics and cargo scheduling remain material to the operation’s sales profile. These are company-attributable figures, not national totals. [1]

The immediate operational question is whether additional mine output can be shipped economically. Sales could catch up as delayed cargoes move, but the production report does not establish when that will happen.

Angola’s crude production averaged 1,045,387 barrels per day in September 2026, according to ANPG’s 14 October release. That was 3.95% above August but 1.30% below September 2025. Output remained below the year-earlier rate despite the rebound from August. Neither comparison establishes the direction of export revenue, which also depends on realised prices and cargo timing. [2]

ANPG recorded average gas production of 2,795 million cubic feet per day for September 2026, up 17.04% from August. Angola LNG plant output averaged 156,472 barrels of oil equivalent per day, including LNG, butane, propane and condensates. The aggregate is broader than LNG alone and should not be presented as LNG exports. The figures describe production activity; they do not establish cargo sales or cash receipts. [2]

Brent is a dated international reference, not an Angolan realised selling price. The price observation and production periods differ; multiplying them would not produce a reliable revenue estimate.

Week ahead: 26 October–1 November 2026

• South Africa’s September producer-price release is scheduled for 29 October. Mining components will provide a separate check on domestic producer prices, rather than production volumes. [4]

• Angola’s statistical calendar provisionally schedules September industrial-production and export/import-price releases for 30 October. These could add context to the petroleum figures; publication dates remain subject to change. [5]
