Argentina LNG expansion advances on two timelines

Summary

Pipe deliveries and marine surveys show Argentina’s LNG export projects progressing through different stages of development. Southern Energy’s pipeline construction is creating work for ports and trucking firms, while the larger YPF–Eni–XRG project continues engineering work alongside a conditional financing proposal.

Key developments

Southern Energy pipeline moves further into construction

Río Negro’s 16 October update confirmed that San Antonio Este had completed unloading 3,495 pipes from the fourth shipment for San Matías Pipeline. A further 2,829 pipes were expected on the fifth vessel; the release did not confirm their unloading. Materials are moving inland and initial excavations have started. The pipeline will supply Southern Energy’s floating liquefaction units. Port handling and road transport show work progressing, although equipment deliveries do not establish an operating export terminal. [1]

Argentina LNG advances its marine engineering

A separate 13 October announcement reported that YPF had begun a roughly four-week geotechnical campaign near Sierra Grande. The BG Warrior is collecting seabed samples and conducting tests to inform terminal and associated infrastructure design. This work supports the YPF–Eni–XRG Argentina LNG project, which should not be confused with Southern Energy’s development. The environmental-review hearing is scheduled for 16 November. Neither the survey campaign nor the hearing announcement constitutes final approval to operate. [2,3]

Financing proposal carries conditions

YPF’s 23 September release disclosed a US EXIM proposal for up to US$6 billion of long-term financing, subject to the lender’s board approval. The proposed funding is tied to purchases of US goods and services. YPF estimated US$29 billion of investment through 2031, including infrastructure and upstream development. The proposed loan would cover part of a larger development, but these figures cannot establish the funding gap: the release does not provide a complete, committed financing package. Procurement eligibility and financing commitments remain separate questions from engineering progress. [4]

• YPF’s 29 October earnings webcast may clarify funding commitments and project schedules; no outcome is assumed here. [5]

• Further San Matías delivery and construction updates would show whether the materials arriving at port are translating into progress along the route. [1]

• Any published findings or schedule changes from the marine survey campaign, ahead of November’s environmental hearing. [2,3]

The latest project update cited is dated 16 October. Financing figures remain September disclosures; these are project metrics, not live market prices.
