US imports of Nigerian crude remained below their recent rolling average in the latest preliminary weekly estimates [1]. South Africa’s lagged mining release supplies a separate view of resource activity, with weaker production and mineral sales than a year earlier [2].

Key developments

  • Nigerian-origin crude imports into the United States averaged 12 thousand barrels per day, against 11 thousand in the preceding week (EIA, released 21 October 2026, weeks ended 16 and 9 October 2026, [1]). The latest observation sits well below the four-week average shown below. For this trade route, the weekly reading and rolling measure give different impressions of recent activity. These are arrivals at a particular destination. They do not measure Nigeria’s national production or its shipments to other buyers, and the preliminary estimates may be updated [1].
  • South African mining production fell 12.7% from a year earlier (Stats SA, released 13 October 2026, August 2026 versus August 2025, [2]). This is retained context, not a new release this week. Platinum group metals and coal were the largest negative contributors, with iron ore also weighing on the total [2]. The breadth of those contributions matters more for reading the aggregate than treating the headline as the experience of every mineral. The release measures physical production; it does not establish a change in mine profitability.
  • Mineral sales at current prices also declined in South Africa [2]. The sales measure combines quantities sold with their selling prices, while the production index tracks volume [2]. Reading them together gives a firmer description of the August contraction, without assigning it solely to commodity prices. A mine can produce material before it is sold, so the series also describe different stages of activity. Neither measure alone establishes current profitability or the direction of resource-sector cash receipts.

What to watch next week

26 October to 1 November 2026

  • We are monitoring the next Nigerian-origin US import estimate and its rolling average. EIA schedules its next weekly release for 28 October 2026 (EIA, release calendar accessed 23 October 2026, [1]).
  • We are monitoring revisions to the South African production and sales series. A later observation could show whether the contraction continued; the current evidence does not answer that question [2].
